Use of Shellac in Munitions and Pyrotechnics

Shellac is used in the manufacture of munitions and pyrotechnics. One of the requirements of the material used in ammunitions is that it should not promote or accelerate the decomposition of explosives and thereby reduce the functioning or storage life. Shellac fulfils the requirement admirably. It finds extensive use as a water-proofing varnish for cartridges, shell cases etc., As a retarder in gunpowder mixtures used for rockets, and as a general adhesive and binding material.		    


Magnesium is one of the main ingredients in pyrotechnic compositions for signal cartridges, flares etc. In order to protech magnesium from the action of oxidising agents during storage, magnesium powder is coated with a solution of Dewaxed Bleached Shellac.

In the composition of detonators Dewaxed Bleached Shellac is used to retard and regulate the speed of detonation for safety.

In rocketry Dewaxed Bleached Shellac composition has been found to be better fuel than p.v.c. composition as the latter one produces corrosive gas after burning and corrode the rockets shell whereas shellac produces inactive products. As rocket fuel shellac composition is a successful composition.
